I currently have the option of procuring the 1st ed FFG edition at a fair price. However my question is, if price was not a factor, what would be the better route (components? rules? others? compatibility?)? Should I go ahead and get the 1st ed then just get an upgrade kit? Or should I pass and just buy a 2nd ed outright?

I'd recommend the 2nd edition outright if you are already considering an upgrade.

I have 1st ed, so yeah, i need the upgrade.

But if i where you, i'de get the 2ed and be upgraded automatically. Plus, Ares just announced an expansion, so save your $$$ for that.

This is good advice, really.

However, if you decide you like the original board artwork and/or dice better, that could be a reason to buy the first ed. Assuming twenty bucks isn't a huge issue.

The only benefit in getting the 1st edition (that you can upgrade to 2nd edition for more balanced gameplay) is that you can still play it (using the 1st edition cards & rules) with the expansion.

If that's not important, the 2nd edition is now the best version to buy (apart from an upgraded Collector's Edition of course).

One more difference is the Nazgul sculpt is different between editions so depending on preference there (along with the map) 1st with upgrade kit has its advantages especially if you manage to find the old expansion it would be compatible there.

I was unemployed when the collectors ed came out or Id have one now too. I cant justify the after market price.

Do you need anything other than the upgrade kit to upgrade to 2nd Edition?

The first edition.

Probably want the new rulebook handy.

I prefer the new Nazgul sculpt, and the addition of the Gollum figurine. I was torn between whether to get the upgrade for my first edition or get the second edition outright, but found a very low price for 2nd ed. brand new.

If you don't have the first edition already, I'd suggest that the choice to buy the second edition is easy.
