The spiritual sequel of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus is a rather unique 3D puzzle platform action game in which the player has to defeat sixteen gargantuan colossi, by climbing up onto them and stabbing certain weak spots. The game takes place in a large desert world completely void of life, and a substantial amount of the playing time is spent trying to find the way to the giant enemies. The player is equipped with a sword that points out in which direction the next foe lurks, but it's up to the player to find the way there. Once there, the player has to figure out how to reach the colossus' weak spot, which usually requires some trick of using the bow or the surrounding environment. The goal of the game is to defeat all sixteen colossi, in order to please the local gods to revive the young woman the player carries to the land in the beginning of the game.
Shadow of the Colossus quickly became famous for the stripped-off atmosphere, and the total lack of 'cannon fodder' enemies, consisting only of the so-called boss fights.
