Wanting to prevent the horrors of the Second World War, Albert Einstein invents a time machine and sends himself to Germany of the 1920s. There he comes across a man named Adolf Hitler and erases him from history. He makes a triumphant return to the present… only to find that the Soviet Union, unhindered by an epic struggle against fascist Germany, has swept across the Eurasian continent, establishing a new Soviet empire.

The European democracies fight a desperate battle for survival against the overwhelming forces of Soviet Russia, and in the shadows, a man named Kane quietly stands by Stalin's side.

In Command & Conquer: Red Alert, the player can either go through the Allied and Soviet campaigns or do battle with other players online. In contrast to other games of the franchise, the protagonist Allies field forces that are comparatively weaker than those of the Soviets, except on the sea, where an Allied cruiser outranges any other unit in the game.
