One of the best-known characters in Arabian Nights, Aladdin is a young ne'er-do-well in China when he is co-opted by a sorcerer to acquire a magic lamp from a trap-filled cave. Aladdin, through the power of a magic ring and later the lamp, summons genies that assist him in amassing wealth, marrying a princess, defeating the sorcerer (and his more-evil brother), and ultimately ascending to the throne.
