The idea began as a Chit Chat secret Santa suggested by user Jatoha on September 30, 2008.
The name "B.O.B." came from a post by user Vandemonium in Jatoha's original thread. - The use of "Barney" may have been subliminally implanted by various and sundry comments made by MisterCranky.
B.O.B. is similar to a white elephant gift exchange. Gifts are meant to be funny, amusing, whimsical, possibly a bit frightening (but not too much so...) The idea behind B.O.B. is related to the Chit Chat mentality of silly fun. Therefore, thrift store, dollar store, clearance items, crap laying around your house that you want to get rid of, are the norm. Some people also received games much like the regular Secret Santa program. While that is fantastically generous, one does not need to spend much money to be able to fully participate in B.O.B.
A B.O.B. user account was created in order for people to taunt each other with what might be coming in the mail

A bob admin account is used by the organizers for communication, taunting and general devilry.
