BGG Image Policy

Welcome

Welcome to Board Game Geek (BGG)This manual will be dedicated on how to enter data into the system. All the conventions we chose and all the main cases. If you have any doubt about the process that is not covered here, please ask at the How to BGG forum.

Design Goals

The idea behind images in the BGG database is to allow users to clearly identify the game, and to pleasantly navigate the database. There are rules for the images to deal with two issues: the first is that the game galleries need to be useful, easy to navigate and not cluttered with many duplicate images. The second is to respect the rights of the intellectual property rights holders.

General Rules

These general rules apply no matter which gallery the image is been submitted:

  • You must own the image in some way or have permission to use it for this purpose.
  • If the image is an original piece of artwork, you must have written permission of the intellectual property rights holder to upload it;
  • If your image is declined, seek out the reason and correct the problem. Do not try to upload again in the hopes it will get through geekmod;
  • Images must be in normal RGB format. CMYK isn't universally supported by all browsers yet and will be blocked by the upload system;
  • If you have received written permission to use the image from the intellectual property rights holders, Include a notice that permission was received and from whom in the caption
  • Animated images are not allowed;
  • Watermarked Images are not allowed;
  • Images must be cropped, correctly orientated and without glare;
  • Scans and copy-photography images of components, such as counter sheets, cards, and other flat materials, may have a maximum resolution of 200ppi, or a maximum size of 1900 pixels on the long side, whichever is less.
  • Images outside the size guidelines should not be submitted and will be declined;
  • Images without captions should not be submitted and will be declined.
  • Before uploading an image, consider whether it is likely to be approved.
  • Make sure that the image is properly cropped and rotated, and that the quality is at least comparable to other images in the database.
  • Do not link images from a personal gallery to a database entry.

Policy for Board Games

Guidelines for the Game Gallery

  • Rule Scans: Please don't upload scans of the rules pages.
  • Permission: Images for which you don't have permission.
  • Offensive: Image contains inappropriate material.
  • Corrupt: Image does not display properly.
  • Too small: Image resolution is too low. (Images should be at least 320x200) Company logos are an exception - they are allowed at any resolution.
  • Duplicate image: Image is already in the database.
  • Too similar: Image is similar to an existing image and is not of significantly better quality.
    • Please do NOT submit individual images for every mini or every card in a minis heavy or card heavy game. This is especially true for collectible minis games and CCGs.
  • Blurry: Image is not well focused.
  • Under/Overexposed: Image is too dark or bright or obscured by a reflection from the flash.
  • Badly cropped/rotated: Image has too much white space or is sideways or upside-down.
  • Wrong item: Image is submitted for the wrong item.
  • Painted miniatures and custom components shouldn't be upload to this gallery

Guidelines for the People Gallery

  • Use this gallery for images where the people are the main focus of the image;
  • Images of the game in play should normally be here

  • Painted minis and custom components should be updated here;
