How To Teach: Caylus
Theme and Goal
In Caylus, each player is an architect competing for royal prestige by helping the King of France build a castle near the town of Caylus. The town of Caylus is small at the start, but will grow to support the architects and their workers in building the castle. The winner is the player who, at the end of the game, has the most prestige points (victory points).
Overview of Game Play
You earn prestige points through different means:
- Contributing directly by building sections to the castle
- Contributing indirectly by building sections to the town
- Gaining royal favor
The game board is divided into different sections. Name these for future reference:
- Castle which has three parts that will be filled: dungeons, walls and towers
- Special buildings
- Main town area the area that you can add buildings to
- Basic pink buildings that are randomly placed at the start of the game
- Some fixed buildings
- Special marks for bailiff and scoring; tell players that this is explained later
- Bridge
- Favor tracks
- Turn order track
- Prestige point track
To do things, the following items are available:
- Workers
- Resources: food, wood, stone, cloth and gold
- Money: called deniers
Each turn is broken up into seven phases. Players follow a turn order in each phase, which is fixed unless players actively influence it during play. (If teaching a 2-player game, explain that the turn order changes each turn). You can order these conceptually in four sections: getting income, worker placement, activation of placed workers and end of turn administration.
- Income : get money
- Place workers : a worker does jobs for the architect
- Activate special buildings : activates special buildings with workers
- Bribe provost : influence which workers will be activated next
- Activate other buildings : activates other workers
- Build in castle : builds castle sections
- Move bailiff : end of turn adminstration
Details of Game Play
Getting income
This contains one phase. This part simply hands out money to the players.
- Income -
- Each player receives 2 deniers (even in the starting turn)
- Each player receives 1 denier per green building they own (how is explained later)
Worker placement
This contains one phase. In this part, players compete to claim locations for activation next. Basically, players claim potential actions.
- Place workers
- In turn order, each unpassed player either:
- Places one worker by paying the lowest number on the bridge and placing a worker on a building that's not already occupied.
- Deal with exceptions later.
- Passes and places his marker on the bridge, thus increasing the lowest number on the bridge.
- The first player to pass receives one denier
- Play then goes to the next unpassed player.
- This phase ends when all players have passed
Activation of placed workers
This part is split into four phases. This part is the action phase, where the workers placed in the previous part are converted into actual actions. Workers placed in special buildings and in the castle always get activated. Workers in the main part of the town get activated depending on the movement of the provost. Finally, workers in the castle are activated.
- Activate special buildings
- In the order from the castle to the bridge, activate each special building with a worker.
- Explain the buildings later.
- Bribe provost
- In bridge passing order, each player has the opportunity to bribe the provost to move, for a maximum of three spaces at the cost of one denier per space.
- It's allowed and encouraged to advice each other about how to move the provost.
- No physical goods can be exchanged between players
- Agreements can be made but are not binding
- The final position of the provost determines how many buildings are activated next turn.
- Activate other buildings
- From the space closest to the bridge up to and including the final position of the provost, activate each building with a worker in that order
- A player with a worker on an activated building gets to execute the action of that building.
- Now is a good time to explain the pink buildings and the fixed buildings
- Basic farms for resources
- Market to buy resources
- Bazaar to sell resources
- Carpenter to build wooden buildings
- Constructing a building give the following benefits:
- Player gains immediate prestige points
- Placing a worker on your own building always costs only one denier, regardless of the amount of players that have passed
- If someone else places a worker on your building, you immediately gain one prestige point
- Constructed buildings are often improved versions of pink buildings, like the better farms.
- Some of the new buildings allow the construction of other buildings.
- Stone buildings are better than Wooden buildings. Point out the stone farms and the fact that the owner will get a resource if activated with a worker of a different player.
- Green buildings give money and are needed for Blue buildings. Green buildings can only be built over pink buildings or buildings the player already owns.
- Blue buildings give lots of prestige points and sometimes favors. Blue buildings can only be built over green buildings the player already owns.
- The special buildings in the previous section are:
- The gold mine gives gold
- Build in castle
- In order of playing on the castle, players build as many batches as they wish and are able to into the current section.
- To build a batch, you need three different resources, one of which must be a food resource.
- Building a batch gains the player immmediate prestige points. The amount depends on the section being built.
- Point to the icons representing this
- At the end of this phase, the one who contributed most to the castle in this phase gains a favor. These are good things. The effect of favors will be explained later.
- In a tie, the one who built first gains the favor
- If a player has placed a worker in the castle, but is unable or unwilling to build a batch, he gets a X prestige point penalty
End of turn adminstration
The final part of the turn is executed in one phase: move the bailiff and the provost, and score a section in necessary.
- Move bailiff
- If the provost is in front of the bailiff, move the bailiff forward by two spaces
- If the provost is in the same space or behind the bailiff, move the bailiff forward one spaces
- Move the provost to the same space as the bailiff
- Scoring a castle section is necessary when:
- the bailiff has moved past the corresponding icon
- the section was filled in the previous castle-phase
- Scoring means: an amount of favors depending on the amount of batches in the section scored, or a prestige point penalty if a player has no batch in the section scored.
- Point to the icons that show this information
Favors
At different points in time during the game, players can gain favors. What this means is explained now:
- Gaining a favor means choosing a track
- Move the marker forwards on the chosen track, if possible. This depends on the current section that's being built. Pont at the icons that represent this.
- Choose an action corresponding to that track. This can be any action on that track up to and including the new position of the marker.
- So, it's possible to choose a track even if maxed out, or maxed out in this section. It's also possible to choose a different action than the newest one, if the player so chooses!
- A player cannot choose the same track more than once in the same phase.
- The player can choose the same track more than once in a turn as long as it occurs in different phases
- The four tracks have the following effects:
- Gain prestige points
- Gain deniers
- Gain resources
- Build a building immediately, with a discount.
- NOTE: This means that when you move up the building track, you gain the ability to simply build a building even without selecting the right builder action (or even without it being in play!). It does not give you discounts on normally constructing a building.
Summarize
This was a lot of information, so let's summarize the basic turn:
- Income - get a base salary of 2 plus 1 per green building
- Place workers at a cost of the lowest number on the bridge. First person to pass gets 1 denier
- Activate the workers, in four phases:
- Activate special buildings
- Bribe provost in passing order
- Activate buildings in order up to the provost space.
- Build at castle in castle order. Each batch gains prestige points. Most batches built this phase gains a favor.
- Move bailiff and score if necessary.
Remind the players that most of the information is on the board. Especially point out the different icons at the castle sections and the buildings. Also indicate the scoring positions for the castle section in the town area for the bailiff.
Remind the players that turn order is affected only by ingame play and it does not rotate as is more usual in games.
End Condition
The game ends when the last section has been scored. Players get some additional points depending on the resources and money they still have.

Exceptions, Corner Cases and other Loose Ends
- Cost of worker placement:
- Exception: if you own a building, the cost for placing a worker there is always one denier
- Exception: if you are in the inn, the cost for placing a worker anywhere is always one denier
- Unable to build a batch at end game
- During the castle phase in the final turn, it's possible that there are no more spaces left for a player to build a batch. If so, the player indeed cannot build a batch, but if the player is actually holding enough resources to build a batch, the player will not be penalized for not building in the castle this phase.
- If the above occurs and it leaves the player without a single batch in the section though, the player will be penalized during the scoring of this section in the next phase.
A Bit of Strategy
Make sure that players understand the order in which the workers get activated! It's possible to want to perform an action, but the necessary resources will be available later.
Gold is needed to build blue buildings.
Favors are important. Favors are gained primarily through jousting or building in the castle and secondarily through scoring castle sections or constructing certain buildings.
