Image submissions

Introduction

A game’s image gallery plays a large role in the BoardGameGeek database. Images are useful to gamers in several ways. It can be used to compare box art for various versions, show game components and their relative scale, or demonstrate how the game looks in play. It can also give ideas on modifications other gamers have done to enhance their gaming experience. Submitting images to the database is easy. Not only is it a great way to contribute to the site, but it is also a great way to earn GeekGold! So look through your collection, and see what images you can submit.

How To Submit An Image

  1. First locate the game’s page that you wish to submit your image to.
  2. Scroll down to the section marked IMAGES.
  3. Click the link marked ADD IMAGE.
  4. You will be brought to the upload page. Please make sure that you are submitting the image to the correct game. To know which game you are submitting to, look at the top of the page. The page should say Upload Image For Game Page: (The Game). Also read and understand the uploading rules before submitting the image.
  5. Click the BROWSE button next to the FILENAME: field. A browse window will pop up. Browse to the image on your local hard drive, select it and click open. The path to your image appears in the FILENAME: field.
  6. You can add an optional caption to your picture in the CAPTION field. This area is to describe the image being uploaded. A caption can include a comment, clarification on what we’re seeing, or a clever quip.
  7. The next section asks about the origin of the image. You can choose one of two options:
    • Option 1: I created this image myself.
    • Option 2: I did not create this image, but have received explicit permission from the rights holder to post it here.
      • Note: Please do not post any image that doesn’t fall within these two categories as it violates copyright laws.
  8. Press the SUBMIT button. Your image will be uploaded to the database. An administrator must approve the image before it’s freely available in the database for general viewing.

Image Submission Rules

You may only upload pictures that you have taken yourself or for which you have obtained explicit permission to upload from the rights holder. Uploading others' pictures without explicit permission may be grounds for suspension of uploading rights or suspension of your account, depending on the severity of the offense.

Before uploading an image, consider whether it is likely to be approved. Make sure that the image is properly cropped and rotated, and that the quality (focus, exposure, glare. etc.) is at least comparable to other images in the database. Also ensure that the image is at least 320x200 pixels in size or it will automatically be rejected. Submitting multiple similar images at once may result in all images being rejected; instead try choosing the best image or images from a set to upload. Please don’t upload scans of rules pages.

The following definition of categories were suggested when the image gallery was split into categories.

  • Game - Images where the focus is on the game, the box, and/or unaltered components.
  • People - Images where people are prominently featured with the game
  • Creative - Images of the game that contain creative elements such as modified components, fun situations, storage solutions, screen shots of computer implementations, advertisements, ...

Please upload images in JPG format and only click the submit button one time.

Image Approval

All images submitted require approval before they are available in the game entry’s image gallery. The approval process can take anywhere from two days to two weeks.
Once approved, the image becomes available in that game’s image gallery. You’ll also receive some geekgold for your trouble.

Why Was My Image Submission Rejected?

Reasons that an image is rejected include:
    • Wrong game.
    • Irrelevant to the game.
    • Considered spam or contains an advertisement.
    • Offensive.
    • A duplicate image in the gallery.
    • Image is too similar to an existing image in the gallery.
    • Too small.
    • Too big.
    • Image is corrupt or doesn’t display properly.
    • Under or over exposed.
    • Image has a bad glare.
    • Poorly cropped.
    • Image is upside down or sideways.

Image Copyrights:

By submitting an image to BoardGameGeek, you are granting permission for it to be shown on the site, but you retain all other rights; if someone wants to use your picture elsewhere, they must obtain your permission.

Can I change an image caption after I uploaded the image?

Yes. Just click at the "Edit" button at the top of the image page.
