Star Fleet Universe series

The Star Fleet Universe series of games started with Star Fleet Battles. Since that first game, there have been expasnions, new editions, campaign games, RPG games, and card games based on the original Star Fleet Battles, all based in the same licensed universe from Paramount and Franz Joseph Designs. This page outlines the different games of the series.

Star Fleet Battles

The "Flagship" game of the series. A simulation wargame based on the original "Star Trek" TV series. Although there is no direct mention of "Star Trek" or its characters in the game, players will find many familiar races or Empires, such as the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Tholian, Gorn, Orion pirates, and even the Kzinti from the Animated Series.

Several of these games had expansions into new areas of the galaxy, or presenting new ships:

Federation and Empire

Since it's inception, players have wanted to have the chance to make the 'big decision' - guide entire fleets or empires through wars. The SFU has included several 'grand strategic' games to satisfy just this demand.

Largely a rules-only update to the previous edition, the current version is commonly referred to as the F&E2K.

These were all standalone games, but could be used as a campaign game for Star Fleet Battles. Star Fleet Battles could alternately be used as the rules for tactical combat in these games. The later games in the series went into significant detail into the war known as The "General War" between all of the races described in Star Fleet Battles, and which inspired many of the scenarios in Star Fleet Battles.

There are several products in the Federation and Empire Series.

Card Games in the Star Fleet Universe

There have been several card games in the Star Fleet Universe. Although neither was a "collectible" game - all games could be played completely with components in the game set alone - having additional sets is sometimes beneficial for specific combinations of units.

Federation Commander

A significant new game series in the Star Fleet Universe, Federation Commander is plainly inspired by Star Fleet Battles, although it is a heavily streamlined version of the game, updated with current ideas of game design (in both rules simplicity, game play speed, and production values - full-color laminated ship cards are the order of the day, here)

Federation Commander
Klingon Border (2006)
Federation Commander
Romulan Border (2006)

Both "Border" boxes ship with similar rules, simply detailing different fronts for the Federation. There are several products in the Federation Commander Series, expanding either (or both) "Border" boxes.

Prime Directive

An RPG series for the Star Fleet Universe, this line has branched out into all of the major modern RPG systems (D6, D20, GURPs)

Miniatures

Amarillo Design Bureau has a full line of miniatures for use with their starship combat games (Star Fleet Battles, Federation Commander, etc). The scale miniatures obviously work well with those systems, but can also be collected as they have obvious ties to the Star Trek universe.

On BoardGameGeek, this miniature line does not have its own section, but examples of the miniatures can be found on pages for the games in the Star Fleet Battles Captain’s Edition series, as well as Federation Commander Series.
