The Grenadier
The Grenadier Magazine evolved out of Game Designers Workshop's Europa Newsletter in 1978.
Originally titled The Paper Soldier, the first issue appeared as The Grenadier Wargaming Quarterly in digest size 5-1/2 by 8-1/2 inches and 32 pages in January 1978. It dealt exclusively with Game Designers Workshop products and the military history behind some of those battles and campaigns. Issue 4, was the first to discuss another company's wargame - Jedko Games's Fortress Europa.
In 1980, The Grenadier was slated for discontinuance. Issue 12, dated January 1981, was the last Game Designers Workshop issue. At that time, Jeffry Tibbetts offered to take the magazine over. The arrangements were completed and Issue #13, dated June 1981, was the first published by J Tibbetts & Son. This issue was actually printed by Mr. Tibbetts and his son, Robert, on a press in the garage of author Thomas J. Bates [Charge of The Bull, Normandy: The Search for Sidney Bates, VC. This was the last digest size issue. Issue #14 was the first 8-1/2 by 11 inch size issue. Effective with Issue 14, Mr. Tibbetts became Editor.
