Unicode 
Unicode is a standard encoding of letters and symbols for computers. Many large websites with generated content from a large international user base (http://wikipedia.com, http://livejournal.com) successfully use UTF-8 encoding uniformly to handle Unicode seamlessly, but until May 2008, BGG did not. In May 2008, Aldie focused on this issue, and most parts of BGG seem to handle Unicode correctly and consistently now.
Various old BGG wiki pages sometimes have botched Unicode text (game descriptions, guild descriptions, etc). If you see them, you can try fixing them by editing the page and simply resaving it, which seems to correct the problem.
