VGG User Guide: Searching VGG
[toc]
One of the most used functions on the site is search - finding the game or hardware you want to add to your collection, discuss, or simply view.
The Search Bar
A simple search can be entered into the search bar. Searching "All" will search all VGG Categories. The drop down can be used to restrict the search to the following:
Video Games - search all video game names
Hardware - search all hardware names
Franchise - search all VGG_User_Guide:_The_VGG_Database names
Series - search all series names
Themes - search all theme] names
Genres - search all [[VGG_User_Guide:_The_VGG_Database#Genre|genre names
Developers - search all developer names
Publishers - search all publisher names
Forums - search all forum posts
GeekLists - search all GeekList items
Tags - search all tags
Wiki - search all [[[VGG_User_Guide:_Contributing_To_VGG#Wiki|wiki]] titles
Users - search all VGG usernames
Content that searches names will search both primary names and alternative names. Currently alternative names do not display on the search result pages, but that should be corrected soon.
Advanced Search
The advanced search page is accessible via the "Adv. Search" link in the search bar. From this page you can search the description sections of all items in the database, and use the filters to narrow down which items are searched. You can also search Video Game items, using filters to limit your search to specific platforms, genres, themes, or modes.
Search Results
The search results page will list any results which match your search. As mentioned above, alternative names are searched, but not currently displayed, so you may see results that don't at first appear to match. "All" search results are sorted by category, beginning with video game items.
You may see multiple items with the same name - this may because multiple games exist with the same title, or the game may share a name with another item type, such as a series or franchise.
