Welcome to the sure-to-be-massive, soon-to-be-out-of-control Geeklist where VGGers rejoice in beating games large and small, new and old. Here's how this works:

Whenever you finish a game, add it to the list and share your thoughts. Use your best judgement for exactly WHEN a game is 'beaten:' 'final boss defeated,''saw the credits,' 'completed the main storyline,' '100%' etc. Whatever seems reasonable and is the end for you.

These lists have been running since 2011 and tend to draw a lot of conversation. Feel free to offer whatever commentary you like on the game and your experience playing it. Be brief or thorough, broad or narrow - its up to you.

To get started, tell us what platform you played the game on and whether or not you've beaten it before.

There are always some "power-users" on this list who play a lot of games and have a lot to say about them. Don't feel like you have to contribute as much or as often somebody else - we like to hear from new folks and nobody really cares if you're "keeping up with the Joneses."

To all new users: the more the merrier. We try to keep it lively and friendly. There is no need to read through every page before jumping in (though you are encouraged to do that at your leisure.) Be sure to subscribe to this list so you can see what everyone else is playing!

Also head on over to Video Games Abandoned by VGGers in 2017 if a game is driving you nuts or just isn't any good! If you're just not sure about a game, embrace your ambivalence. If you want to see what VGGers were up to in years past, look here.

Also, make sure to join the fray at The 2017 Videogame Challenge!.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Should I add a game to this list if it has already been added by somebody else?
A: Of course!

Q: Should I add a game to list more than once if I beat it more than once?
A: No, but feel free to update your original item or add a new comment beneath it.

Q: I wrote something for this list that seems review-ish. Should I cross-post it as a review?
A: If you are so inclined, cross-post away.

VGG Community Goals for 2017:

mb Community goal 2017: Play the top 101-200 games on the VGG ranking list

mb Community goal 2017: Play games on 5 different platforms!

mb Community Goal 2017: Let's play games on as many platforms as we can!

And of course, our community goal for this list is to finish 1800 games!
___________________________________________________________________________________

Sorting:

VGGer extraordinaire Grimwold hosts a useful sorting mechanism for these lists through his own site (oh, it seems weird now, just wait until there are 1000+ items). This lets you see what individual users have beaten (sort by user) and also how many times a game has been beaten, and by whom (sort by game). Due to the way VGG handles caching, you will need to refresh the lists 10-15 seconds after clicking on the links below.

This is a flash game you can play online. I played at http://www.comagame.net/coma-game.html

The game is supposed to be a creepy dream world, much like Limbo, but it really fails to offer anything worth seeing. There aren't really any puzzles to solve, except for determining where you are supposed to walk to next. I found the game dreadfully uninspired. Even at a mere 30 minutes, I felt it overstayed its welcome, but I knew it was short before I started it so I pressed on and beat it anyway.

The link I provided above describes what the developer meant the game to be about. I don't think the game inspired my imagination at all, nor do I feel any of the characters were interesting, nor did I really get the impression that the world had anything wrong about it (besides being awkward). So really, the game didn't live up to any of the developer's intent.

My intent of playing it was just to try something short and highly rated. (I googled "best short flash games" and found this.) This game did not hit the mark.

I liked this game well enough. It was a nice chill puzzle after the nastily hard ones I've been playing. The sokoban style puzzles with a neat twist worked pretty well, and the game had a lot of entertaining written bits. The final fight, while appropriate, just kind of didn't work. I feel like they wanted to just finish the game off (although the commentary says they wanted to have a big fight but that didn't make sense either) - I think the conversation that was had there was good though.

It has a bit of an older feel to it. The graphics are a bit lower resolution and the sound effects often seem a bit like clip-art audio bits but they're not bad, they just sound like they were on a budget and did what they could with what they had (and I think they did well). I actually quite like the music, and their alternate chiptune versions are nice as well. (but the fact that those exist again gives it that older feel). There was only one thing that really bothered me, which was that to read the commentary (which I did almost all of, possibly all) after completing a room you'd have to leave and come back. Which was annoying enough, but if you left through a high security door, when you re-enter the room, the puzzle is no longer solved! (this only happened once so it might have just been that room, but... I wouldn't risk it :/ )

The puzzles weren't too hard. There was one I spent a little time on, but I feel like I spent as much time doing the puzzles as I did exploring the environment for flavor text (so much flavor text, oh yes). I also tried to get 100% but I feel like either I'm missing loot pickups in the environments (which can be a real pain), or more likely I'm missing some very secret rooms (though I did the update with Alphonse's treasury which is probably why I'm at 97%). It is weird that I'm so high percentage-wise, as I am still short 600 moneys, (I have 12 records left to buy) so I guess it's a couple of safes, but... I dunno, I looked pretty hard. (I found one cleverly hidden special safe but I haven't noticed any other areas that seemed to have a location like that one)

Overall a quite pleasant experience. If you want another slightly different take on sokoban puzzles with a decent story and a surprising number of laughs, I definitely recommend this. I'll likely be looking for the rest of the loot, too.

So while I wait they'll fix my issue with the humble monthly of January I played the first game of February... Xcom2!

Time needed: 45 hours
My vote: 8/10

Xcom 2 is as good as you can imagine... If you enjoyed the first xcom enemy within you'll like this one too, because it's... "xcom enanched" . As it happened with the old ufo saga, sequels are really similar to the original one. Why fixing something that works?

Xcom 2 has more variety in mission than xcom and many more features that boost the experience without becoming overwhelming or complicated. Ofc you don't have to use "everything" but it's so cool, so why not?

I like the extra dialogues that pops up randomly when you build your base (Something I had always loved in ufo) and overall the story is well told.

The missions are challenging enough (but never actually hard) so sometime I had to reload (because even if I have replacements I don't like getting killed my veteran soldiers!). Eventually I learned how to play properly so I didn't reload anymore.

The game is VERY WELL done, I loved every moment of it.

Raccomanded even if you didn't play the first game.

+ Very Good graphic
+ Challenging
+ Fun
+ Ok story and atmosphere
+ Cool setting
+ Well designed
+ Addictive

- No undo button
- Some people will hate the RNG
- Rarely happens that pointing the exact spot in the map it's not easy (too many layers?)

A Poirot adventure game! How wonderful, what could possibly...

Oh dear. The voice acting is horrid and without emotion. The gameplay switches from very light adventure gaming (ok) with choose your line interviews (though this only seems to affect your Poriot points) to strange lock box puzzles (not what I wanted, nor what I enjoy).

The little grey cell sections were fine and it'd be nicer if the game just had this and some adventure game/interview mechanics.

What links the three victims? That they all had amazing furniture custom built by a cabinet maker who is a genius. Japp, let us find this cabinet maker and we will most assuredly solve the case!

Completion info: beat the game then beat 4 challenge levels

I haven't played the original Portal since it came out, so I figured I'd buy it and play it again (previously played on friend's computer).

I really enjoyed the puzzles in this game. There is some great creativity her and Portal does a great job setting the stage for Portal 2 (which offers an even more amazing puzzle adventure experience). Everyone who even remotely likes puzzles should play this game. The puzzles are fantastic, though a few in the escape sequence are not entirely clear where you are supposed to go at first. The plot is also fantastic, which is not something I often see in puzzle games.

The only bad thing I can say about Portal is that it waits until you enter a new area to load the new area, so brief pauses to load frequently interrupt your testing initiatives.

Please enjoy some Portal ASCII art

Completed: Burly Men at Sea
Platform: PC

Burly Men at Sea is a folktale about three large bearded fishermen, named Hasty, Steady, and Brave, that has recently been released on Steam after appearing on iOS and Android. The brothers set out looking for adventure after finding a map and your choices and direction will decide how the story plays out. While it can control like a point and click adventure there is no inventory, no puzzles, and no fail state, just the continuing story that you tell. The game will start and end with the same event but you are able to run into two different events in between them, and each one allows you to play things out in different ways. Even when repeating the same situation on a new journey the brothers might end up doing something else, possibly changing the outcome or situation in events you thought you had already fully explored. Repetition is avoided both by the possibly of events playing out different and by the brothers remembering their past adventures and commenting on their previous experiences. The game has a simple but very fitting and charming art style and the sound effects are made entertaining because they are all done by human voices.

Child of Light
Windows
1st time beaten
Time to beat:
8 hours

This was a gift from Luis. Thanks again.

Assorted thoughts:

* Like all 2D Ubisoft games, it is amazingly pretty. the UbiArt Framework is capable of handling all kinds of styles, from Rayman's ultra-colorful world, to Valiant Hearts's Belgian-French Comic style, and including Child of Light's watercolor aesthetics.

* The only blemish is that the animation is slightly inferior in Child of Light. Also, Aurora's 3D hair feels like it doesn't belong.

* The music by French-speaking Canadian singer Coeur de Pirate is generally nice, especially the song playing during the credits. With that said, the in-game tunes are a little generic and take no risk. All the items in the "fairy tale music checklist" are marked and the battle music feel derivative of countless other JRPG titles. It's a minor complain, and I understand it's her first video game soundtrack (she did record music for a Canadian TV show the year before), so it's easy to forgive.

* I really like the battle system. It is reminiscent of Final Fantasy's ATB, with its gauges filling with time, But with the addition of a character's action being interrupted if (s)he's hit while in the last portion of the time gauge. It makes for very dynamic fights that keep the player's attention at all times, especially because you can position a firefly above an enemy to slow it down.

* The game offers tow levels of difficulty: Casual and Expert. I played Casual but that was a mistake in retrospect. Battles were too easy and as a result I didn't enjoy the above-mentioned system as much as I could have.

* The character management is not as interesting as the battle system. First, you level up too often. It's a rare fight that doesn't result in at least one of your characters levelling up. You then have to assign skill points in graphs inspired by what you find in Final Fantasy X, but that offer few really interesting choices or compromises.

* There is no weapon/armour to manage, but each character has three spots for gems, that work a bit like materia in FFVII. You can combine gems to craft stronger variations. A good idea, marred by the fact that the bonus conferred, even at the highest levels, are slightly too weak to really matter.

* The story is incredibly generic, while also completely nonsensical. The characters are nothing more than basic archetypes. It always amazes me when a game so carefully crafted in terms of visuals and systems gets dragged down by a rushed story.

* Likewise, the writing is bad. They've made all the dialogues rhyme. It's a pleasant quirk in the beginning, but it quickly gets tiresome because the writers didn't have the (admittedly immense) talent needed to keep this fresh until the end.

Overall, I recommend Child of Light, mostly for its incredible visuals. The different JRPG systems are derivative of other games, but stay interesting too.

If you're in the mood for a JRPG, but don't want to invest 10's of hours into one, Child of Light is a good option to consider. Provided you don't play those games for their stories.

Beaten for first time (Windows/Steam) and it took a little over an hour.

The narration is what makes this game. It's quick and some of the achievements are fun, although I didn't feel like getting them all. Overall I felt it was just OK. Maybe it's because I remember having a lot more fun with the demo a few years back. Maybe I played it too fast. Still it's not bad for a buck or two. I think I liked
Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist better and it's free.

Not a lot to say here, it's your standard hidden object game. I had fun. Decent story, average voice acting, some decent puzzles. Not that many hidden object scenes overall, maybe less than 10? Which I'm ok with, I like the way you often do puzzles and other object manipulation outside the HO scenes.

I'm annoyed that I misclicked once, and instead of clicking on an object, I clicked the hint button and lost an achievement.

There were also three different sets of collectibles that I was unaware of until mid-game, so I missed completing any of those. I always like it when a game puts a super obvious one right away, so you're aware of them and can decide if you're going for them or not.

Played through this free game and found it pretty amusing. The voice-acting just is great. Kind of reminds me a bit of the Stanley Parable, except it's completely linear instead of being very open-ended and choice-based like Stanley Parable.

Finally after 8 years I've finally aquired
Spoiler (click to reveal)
La Esponja Grande.

{not sure if that really required the spoiler tag, but eh}

This rather short but sweet chapter in the Tales of Monkey Island series was a wonderful palete cleanser after the ABC Murders.

It did feel quite like a classic Monkey Island (I don't really remember the first two chapters though) and for that I give it one thumb and a hook up.

Guess I'll see how the last two treat me.

Tried it on a recommendation and found it kind of, well, meh. Some of the characters are annoyingly useless. The last boss fight was frustrating and I had to look up how to beat just to get by it. At least it was free and did not last long.

My vote 7/10

NOT the first time.

I cannot remember if I played this game already once or twice. I could remember most of the puzzles and of the story so it was mostly a nostalgic thing. I appreciated the ending more than I used to, even if it something that still disappoints me because it's too open for a sequel. Beside that the sequel (monkey island 3) didn't seem to actually follow that path... :\

Anyway even if it was a masterpiece nowadays I rate it 7, meaning I liked many daedalic games more. There is too much walking in this game, in my opinion and a couple puzzles are too hard probably.

By the way I played the special edition on steam. I bought the game for a nostalgic reason and for my collection (my original copy of monkey 2 was STOLEN -.-).

The special edition adds some very cool new features, including SPEECH, new GRAPHIC, new UI, the possibility of switching back to the old version pressing F1, and developers commentary (wich was nice but not great to be honest).

So I think it's a must have for nostalgic players who loved monkey 2 back in the days and it's a raccomanded purchase for those who want to discover this classic with the flavour of modern ui, graphic, music and speech.

+ Monkey Island 2
+ Special edition adds many cool features

- I already played it

NOT first time beaten
Time to beat
: 15 minutes

I want to play Samorost 3 at some point this year, so I figured it'd make sense to play the first two games again before that.

The first game is short and free. I suppose a first playthrough should take about 30 minutes. But it's not a prelude or first chapter: it's a full self-contained game with an ending.

It's also cute and has a distinctive art style. I see no reason to not play it, except maybe if you only enjoy cerebral adventure games: Samorost is surreal and intuitive. Only the last puzzle is bad.

I'm looking forward to re-playing Samorost 2.

Link to the game

Rating: Highly Recommended.

I feel like Firewatch got played a lot here but I'm gonna say my piece anyway. I liked this game a lot, it is one of the most complete Walking Sim games out there. The entire area is extremely well designed - I found myself recognizing where I was often without using the map as I played more - and I really thought they did a great job making climbable/interactable parts of the environment clear without feeling too unnatural even though many of the rock outcroppings were repeated. Exploring was interesting and finding all the notes and trinkets in caches and lying around felt rewarding. From a technical perspective, it felt really impressive how complex the world appeared while still working extremely smoothly the entire time. The world looked amazing and I loved it. I only really had two complaints about the whole thing - there are a couple places where you can jump across small gaps or whatnot (and one place where you chop down a tree and both of those actions looked extremely awkward and physics-defiant. Especially the jumping which totally felt like you just sort of hopped up in the air, hovered over the (usually small) gaps, then sort of just touched down but at the last minute kind of stomped. It was really weird, I don't even think I'm describing it that well.

The voice acting was some of the most natural feeling in any of the games I've played, and mostly the dialogue didn't seem forced or anything. In fact, not only that, but with maybe one exception I found that they did a great job smoothing all the conversations and pieces together. If you are having a discussion and want to respond, if you do so in the middle of Delilah talking, you don't just interrupt, you wait for a moment until there is a break in her sentence. And your responses are always pretty reliably what you expect them to be based on the choices you're given (at least that was my experience). Sometimes there were two fairly similar choices but I never felt like I chose poorly because of that. Also, I really liked how the story felt more organic and had kind of an air of awkwardness that wasn't a bold and righteous hero interacting with his good chum or even having a relationship that necessarily has them getting along right away. Especially right after the intro, it had some very interesting and kind of tricky conversation choices that made it feel like you were playing a role more than anything else. It also doesn't wrap up neatly, and no one really wins, which definitely makes sense. I wouldn't say I was satisfied with the conclusion, but there's no way you could be I think. Funnily enough, I got so absorbed that I was a bit surprised when I couldn't explain a bit of conversation near the end of the game the way I wanted to - it played out in a way that made sense to me but I had a response I wanted to make that wasn't an option. Not really a fault of the game design but I felt like I got my mind really merged with that of the character and made my own ideas about how things should go. It was very immersive.

One aspect of the story I was surprised never went anywhere was about drinking - the intro made kind of a big deal about your alcohol habits, and alcohol in general seemed to come up a bunch but there was never really a definite statement, though it sure felt like the narrative put alcohol solidly in the negative column. I'm OK with that but it was just odd I guess? Hard to really say.

I really enjoyed this. It seems pretty obvious: if you like the idea of walking simulators, this is probably the best one I've played in almost every way and I couldn't recommend it more.

Steam Mac version. 100%, 1st time played, a little under 2 hours.

A fine game from the makers of Ittle Dew and Card City Nights, featuring all of your favourite characters: Apathetic Frog, Wash-Olof, Hype Snake.

It's a top down arena shooter, where the Princess heals baddies by shooting syringes and pills at them. You can also date a microwave and an armadillo.

Lovely Spectrum graphics also. Enjoyed it a lot.

Mother Russia Bleeds is a cool retro style action game, like double dragon. It has nice pixel graphic and, as you can imagine by the title, a lot of blood. I loved that! I think this would have been better if I could play it with another person (it has up to 4 players coop!), but I enjoyed it anyway. The game it's fun and challenging (especially the last boss) and I can definately raccomand it if you like the genre (and you don't mind violence ).

+ Fun
+ Challenging
+ Very good pixel art graphic

- Music is mediocre
- The last boss could feel too hard

1st time beaten?
no
Time to beat: 50 minutes

Continuing my Samorost journey.

compared to the first game, Samorost 2 is essentially more of the same, and also about twice as long. Unfortunately, it's not nearly as good.

The visuals are still delightful, the music is great and the animation is more polished than in the first episode, but the puzzles are lacking. In that regard, the game ticks all the items in the "How not to design an adventure game" checklist.
- Cryptic timed puzzles
- Lots of pixel hunting (there was a little of that in the first episode too, but not to the same extent)
- Gratuitous solutions that don't even make sense in the surreal world.

There are graphical glitches at resolutions above 1080p, but nothing too serious or game-breaking.

The beginning of the game can be played free on Amanita's website, but the rest is only available in the paid version.

Rating: OK

Completed for the first time, on the PC. Took me around 3 hours.

Enjoyment: Medium

Summary: a decent adventure game which is clearly a better fit for touch devices than the PC.

SPOILER WARNING (sort of). I talk about this game's main feature below, but I guess you could call it a spoiler. It's introduced within the first 10 minutes of the game though, so make of that what you will. I don't actually use spoiler tags for this, so read this summary at your own risk. I don't think it's anymore of a spoiler than saying you'll be using Jumping in a Mario game.

I kind of liked this one, but I came away disappointed with how simplistic it is. Yes, I got stuck in a few moments, but two out of three were because of pretty unintuitive design, and one was from pure impatience on my part. I probably wouldn't have used the walkthrough at all if the interface was better.

There are two main problems that made it a bit annoying to play the game at times. The first one is down to how there's only one icon for interactivity, which means that usable hotspots and possible item usages are marked the exact same way as something that'll only get you a commentary from the main character. The commentary itself is the second issue. It often doesn't trigger immediately, giving you an idea that you misclicked... then you click again, and skip a part of the description. Or how you have to wait for the text to scroll itself when a description is longer and doesn't fit on a single screen.

Neither of these two are deal breakers, but the gameplay isn't anything special either. The puzzles are simplistic and, at times, more than a bit anticlimactic. There's a whole, rather complicated and involving sequence, which ends up with you finding a very everyday object... which was only obscured by darkness, not actually hard to find or anything. That's one of the tricks the game uses quite often, that get old very quickly – darkness and illuminating it to be able to interact with what's there... only, annoyingly enough, the game itself breaks that rule when it asks you to use an object that you can't see based on standing next to it. It only does that once, too.

The game is about time travel, but that mechanic isn't too well integrated. There's a handful of puzzles that are kind of smart, but mostly you keep using a time machine to go through doors which are locked in one time period, but opened in the other. So not exactly an inspired use of the concept.

The story isn't very interesting either, but it does an ok job dealing with all the pitfalls this theme usually carries with it. The ending isn't all that good, but the game only takes three or so hours to beat, so I guess it's not a big issue that the payoff doesn't quite deliver. There's a twist in there that's pretty neat though.

While I don't think this game is particularly worth playing on the PC, I think I can recommend it if you get it for your iPad or whatnot. If I played this on the bus or on the train instead of cutting out time from other games to complete it, I'd probably be a bit more happy with it. Not a bad casual adventure game, all in all.

It's a short 2d puzzle/platform/meta game and I enjoyed it, especially the ending and so I can raccomand it, but only if you get it for a small price (check the current humble bundle )

First time beaten? Yes
On my VGG Challenge? Yes

I have completed the first of the different Campaigns that is avaiable in the game; Firstly there is only two, but more open up later on.
I will consider the game as beaten, since the various campaigns is also using different sides; The first campaign you are in Germany playing as NATO, mainly using West German armies (French, British, and American armies are also unlockable), after this is done, the next campaign fast foward to 1981, where you now play as a Soviet commander.
The second starter campaign is played as US Army.

I will be taking a break from this, but I properly will turn back! This is a bit hard game, but also quite good in my opinion.

First time? Yes
Enjoyment: high (while it lasted)
Playtime: < 30 minutes
Completion: 100% (83% before hitting the final button, then went back for what I missed)

Refunct is an extremely short (30-minute) casual platformer. Your goal is to reach a number of red buttons spread across the world. Pressing a button will cause additional pieces of land to rise out of the water, which will contain additional buttons for you to reach. If you choose to pursue 100% completion, the game also has a number of small cubes hidden throughout the world for you to find.

You essentially have the ability to move, jump, and slide, though there are some special ways you can use those movements in order to progress the game. For example, you may not realize you can swim until the game forces you to dive underwater for the first time. You will also quickly learn that you can wall jump and misuse some of the special platforms spread throughout the map to gain additional altitude.

Most platformer games I have seen and played tend to focus on some combination of speedruns, high difficulty, and complex level design. Although Refunct does have an avid speedrunner community, the game breaks the norm of platformers and instead creates an experience anyone can play, completely free of frustration. This is a refreshing change! Everything about this game is enjoyable. Night and day smoothly transition as you play the game, the music is peaceful and encouraging, there is no story to get in the way of the experience and no tutorial to bog you down with instructions, and effort was clearly made to make the game look beautiful everywhere you turn.

I can see myself deleting my save file to play this again. I really enjoyed the experience, and it's short enough that it can provide a relaxing and enjoyable break from whatever stress life (or other video games) throw your way.

Blue Rose is a fantasy VN where you are a girl who will explore a small village while meeting new (and old) people. There is some little romance involved and a lot of action. The game is well written and the story is ok. I appreciated very much that the endings are quite different one from another. Musics and graphic are fine so I raccomand this game to anyone who likes visual novels.

+ Well written
+ Ok story
+ Nice music and graphic
+ Multiple endings
+ Extra content (5 ministories)

- Sometime the pace of narration is too slow
- Not many choices to do
