The third wheel to the popular Videogames Beaten by VGGers in 2017 and Video Games Abandoned by VGGers in 2017 geeklists, this is the list for games that you are still playing even though you are frustrated with at least one aspect of it. See last year's at: Video Games Ambivalently Continued by VGGers in 2016

This list is for the games with which you have a love/hate relationship, maybe games that have no way to fully "Beat" the game (esp. online games), maybe games you play obsessively and then feel bad about, maybe games you stopped playing but then felt bad about quitting, maybe games that have at least one annoyance that should merit quitting, but that also have at least one shining glory that keeps you hooked.

Post your games here, ideally starting with:

At least one PRO
At least one CON

Naturally, following with a detailed explanation of both sides of your ambivalent feelings is best.

PRO: Feeds inner completist, cromulent RPG
CON: No soul, plodding progress

I enjoyed the Gothic series quite a bit. Difficult, but very cool. (Notwithstanding 4, which was a different developer, different style of game, and terrible). The original Risen was in the Gothic style, difficult but satisfying. Risen 2 was somewhat less compelling, less enjoyable. And Risen 3 feels yet another remove from Risen 2, as if someone played the earlier games in the series and copied them but didn't understand what made them great.

It's not a bad game. It's a perfectly serviceable first-person RPG with a big world to explore, various skills, sidequests, factions with which to ally, companions-in-arms, weapons, spells, hidden things, etc. The music and graphics are fine. Nothing's really awful about it, per se. But it lacks any big exciting thing to make you want to play it instead of the hundred other cool RPGs on Steam.

Unless you're me, in which case you keep playing because you want to beat the whole damn series since you've gotten this far.

PRO: Interesting and almost puzzle-like. Also, educational.
CON: Super duper ridiculously long load times. Cumbersome controls/UI.

You take apart cars and replace the broken parts. It's kind of puzzley trying to diagnose cars. I like it. I even got the Dalorean/Back to the Future DLC. The UI and load times put me off playing it, though.

Okay, here we go. I fully expect writing this out to convince me to give up on the game, but I've been stubborn.

PROS: The conclusion to a trilogy of games, of which I thoroughly enjoyed the prequels. The return of familiar characters. Open world exploration. The combat system focusing on a single character allows for more cool abilities to show off, with combo experimentation almost like fighting games.

CONS: The overall story of the series is falling apart under its own weight, which has so many twists and oddities that I'm finding it difficult to articulate to people who haven't experienced it firsthand.

The story of XIII-2 had very little to do with XIII, but had an alternate view of the setting, kind of like how Chrono Cross is tied to Chrono Trigger. But then, the titular return of series focus Lightning doesn't tie the predecessors together either. Each game has the characters under the threat of drastically different kinds of apocalyptic scenarios that really have nothing to do with each other, so there isn't much of a reason for me to believe that this game will have a satisfying end of the saga. Or rather, the two or three sagas that have been tied together in knots.

The time management system is what is really wearing on me. The start of the game gives Lightning so many days to complete her goals before the world is going to end to make room for a new one. Time has been stagnant for 500 years, but when it comes time to gather people together for life to begin anew, then the clock starts to tick. This time limit is loosened by "saving souls," which involves fighting major characters to beat sense into them (the main quests), or completing mundane tasks for peripheral characters (side quests). Essentially, you will waste time if you don't know when to properly make use of time-altering abilities and where/when/how to complete quests, and you don't figure any of those out early on.

Fortunately, there is a forgiving New Game+ system that will allow me to begin the game again with all of my previously acquired skills and increased strength even after failing to save the world in time. However, I'm still two days from the end, which leaves me to either purposefully kill the remaining time to start over or to try to complete quests that I'll just have to do again anyway. And best result, I have to do all of the main quests over again.

PROS - Supposedly among the best games ever made. Prequel to an even better game. I can carry my character into said better game if I finish this one.

CONS - I suck at it. I don't find the combat enjoyable. The wide open worlds appear to have next to nothing to find during exploration.

I've followed the advice of the many VGGers that love this game, but every time I play it the game feels more like a chore than anything else. The only advice that I didn't follow was to pick the Soldier class (because I already had 3 hours of play before I was reminded why to pick that class). I'm far enough into the game now that I have no desire to restart, but I also feel like my Vanguard Shepard is not well-suited to me. I also fail more than 80% of the create unlocks, so I'm not really gaining any new gear to sell or turn into omni-gel.

I like the dialogue and writing. I am enjoying some aspects of making a supersniper zero. But I find is with the slow pace that the character can maneuver.

CON:
Dodging or moving about the battlefield to combat enemies feels cumbersome. Weapons have enough stats and "hidden" features that makes it hard to compare options. This is especially frustrating because the game throws a lot of random drops at you with little carry space for resale/etc. (i.e. I am supposed to quickly assess whether or not to pick up the item that dropped and keep shooting things)
PRO:
Humorous. entertaining. Having a friend at a similar level and jumping into eachothers games is smooth and fun.

I expect to play this a while longer.

Edit: melee on the computer feels clunky, another con in my book. con again: zeros stealth is awkward, often throwing your clone in a place that causes enemies to shoot at you anyways. you don't move fast enough to enjoy a nice repositioning in the timered stealth or a satisfying backstab. Feelsbad.

I've played this game for just under two hours so far.

PROs: well-crafted locations, has a bit of a Heretic/Hexen vibe

CONs: some of the most obtuse and poorly explained mechanics I saw in recent years, and one of the least interesting stories in the genre... and the game takes 15+ hours to complete on top of that.

This game is a first-person shooter with hack n' slash-style looting, based around crafting your own spells. There's a bunch of magic types (Ice, Fire, Kinetic etc.). There are three main categories of spell types - direct hit, area of effect, and shield/nova (the nova is only triggered if you time it right by blocking a hit). So already there's the pretty weird mechanic of one of the spell types only working if you do something pretty specific.

There are also three types of shields, each gives you different options for regenerating them, and they influence your ability to Blink, which is a short-distance teleport. So here's some more complexity on top of the spell types.

And on top of all that is the deep, but obtuse crafting system which allows you to create you own spells by using predetermined parts that influence how it works. The interface with which you do it is pretty bad, and none of this or the above is properly explained. The game throws a tutorial movie your way, which does very little to help you understand what's what.

There's a mechanic called Mastery, and another called Attunement, and I don't specifically know what each of them does. They should influence how you can chain spells together to create combos - like when you freeze an enemy, and then hit him with a fire spell, you deal bonus damage... but again, it's not explained well and the naming convention seems to be unnecessarily confusing.

It's not often that I feel like I have to watch a youtuber explain a game to me, but I think I'll need to do it with this one. If the game was shorter, I'd probably try to figure it out for myself. As it is, I want to make sure I'm not wasting time on something that requires an in-depth understanding of its mechanics to complete.

For Android:

Pros: Great music, clever level design, neat art style, fast paced and challenging

Cons: For some reason there have been some weird annoying bugs that screw up levels sometimes, and this wouldn't be so bad except that you have to finish five levels and if you lose one, you have to do all five again. Did I mention they are hard as heck?

So one of the bugs I've noticed is that sometimes for reasons unknown to me, your character will warp through a platform and stand on the opposite side (OR JUST FLY RIGHT THROUGH?!?). This can range from mild annoyance, to making the level impossible to finish, to instantly killing you. It happens every so often, for no apparent reason, and makes the game hard to play. It's a shame that it's such a compellingly fun and challenging game otherwise because I would be a diehard fan otherwise.

For now, it's relegated to bathroom breaks and public transit (as long as I have headphones, because I really love the chiptune soundtrack)

PRO: A wide array of weapons and strategems plus procedurally generated maps allows for endless variety and great co-op

CON: Progression is neutered significantly in local co-op

This has to go on the ambivalent list because there's no real end in sight. I loooove this game though! It really encourages co-operation and diversification in your team.

Like many other games, local co-op players can't make their own profile, so players 2-4 take on the current advancement of the first player's profile. Normally, we'd each be able to spend our research points to upgrade the stuff that fits with our own playstyle, but now we effectively have to "share" research points, meaning that it's taking a lot longer to get all the upgrades we want than if we were playing online with our own accounts.

Nintendo DS

I was late to the party with the Advance Wars games on GBA, but I enjoyed both games a few years back and I decided to revisit the series on the DS to scratch my nostalgia itch. The problem is essentially that the game changes too much while innovating too little.

PROS: classic Advance Wars characters, units, and basic mechanics.

CONS: new units are impractical and unnecessary (not unlike most RTS expansion packs); the tag system really just gives Eagle's "Lightning Strike" Super Power from the first two games to any group of two CO's; the story is dumber, less coherent, and has you fighting for incredibly ambiguous stakes when compared to the first two games, which were not exactly well-written; the stages are not as well designed and there aren't enough levels which make use of the special skills of your CO's; most of the new CO's either don't have interesting powers or they have annoying personalities; the music quality actually sounds worse than in the older GBA games; some of the later levels take an unnecessarily long time since you effectively win the battle early on and then have to spend an extra two hours mopping up to secure an outcome which has become inevitable.

Despite my long list of grievances, I still intend to finish this game and I have sort of enjoyed myself to this point. I have a feeling my negative feelings will grow as I cut through these last few levels.

I've been playing this game for around 4 hours.

PROs: it's a passable shooter with a somewhat interesting post-apocalyptic setting

CONs: many

Things this game does well:
1) the AI has some interesting behaviours, like dodging, running away, using cover semi-competently etc.

Things this game does so-so:
1) the setting is visually interesting, but catastrophic-level texture popping and plenty of invisible walls ruin the feel of it

Things this game does poorly:
1) shooting is barely fun
2) crafting is pretty much pointless and shouldn't be in the game
3) vehicle physics are pretty terrible
4) the story is barely present
5) why is this game semi-open-world again?

The reason I put it on this list:
The game is notorious for having really bad checkpoints and auto-saves. I just learned that by almost finishing an entire level of the game, and then dying to a poorly designed elevator which instantly squashed me. The last checkpoint is from before even entering the, pretty big, level that I pretty much completed.

No wonder this game's called RAGE!

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all night! Be sure to check out the killer Mojitos at the bar!

Pros: Velocity 2X does a great job blending a bullet-hell shoot 'em up with a platformer, with both sections using similar concepts so the transition between them is seamless.

The puzzle concepts are easy to learn, and often just difficult enough to make you think for a moment without being frustrating.

It was one of the first games I got for free through Playstation Plus, so I didn't waste money by letting it sit around for 2 and a half years.

Cons: Bosses are bullet sponges that kill you repeatedly, but death never ends the level anyway (as far as I can tell), so they really boil down to just brute forcing your way through their tricks.

I was able to make it to Level 41 out of 50 by doing "reasonably well" at every one of the levels, regularly getting (out of 3) a 2 on speed, 3 on collecting survivors (in shoot 'em up mode) and crystals (in platformer mode), and 2 or 3 on points. But that's not enough. So, after a somewhat easy time getting 80% through the game, I'm now expected to go back and master each of the levels at blinding speed in order to progress.

Despite the game demanding high-speed travel in order to master it, many of the puzzle-based levels are labyrinths of teleporting back to branching paths in order to trigger switches as they become available. Getting a Gold in speed on these levels likely requires meticulous memorization that I doubt is worth the effort.

PROS: the game is charming, the music is amazing, the gameplay is engaging and fun. thumbsup
CONS: the late-game is super hard. soblue

This is a surprisingly fun game that combines a traditional Roguelike dungeon crawl with a rhythm game, where each turn happens on the beat of the music. If you keep hitting the beat, you build up a multiplier that applies to loot and some weapon/armor abilities. There is also a character you can play as that ignores the music and turns the game into a regular roguelike as a sort of easy mode. The variety in characters, the different soundtracks, and the mod and custom music support are really great. I adore the game, but I know I won't be able to beat the final level with the rhythm without an unreasonable amount of practice on my part, so while I may still play this game a bit, and I would like to at least beat it with the bard character, I know the more challenging levels with the rhythm is going to be way above my skill level.

PROS: Unique platformer with gameplay similar to Mega Man X.
CONS: Crafting. Also, it's a little too "anime" for me. Like, over the top and cliché. Also, there's always some other game I'd rather play.

This is a pretty cool platformer that is sort of like Mega Man X, but different, and totally anime style. Instead of a normal projectile attack, you tag enemies with a gun and then use a lightning power to zap tagged enemies, which is pretty unique. I kind of like it, but not enough to keep coming back. Though I might, sometime.

No Longer Ambivalent, now I am having fun again.

This game is cute and has a lighthearted tone and music.

-

It is brutally difficult has a learning curve. You can only save once per day. So if you do well up to evening and then suffer a catastrophic loss with a missplaced bomb rock you have to start the day over from the beginning.

I don't think it is intentional, but with a mixed group of Pikmin it can be quite frustrating to utilize the color Pikmin you desire for a specific task.

EDIT:
I just found the radar and tried it out. Not only does it show me the location of ship pieces (I expected that) but it also provides me with a map. And not only a map of where I have been but the entire region.
I have been longing for a map from the time I started this game. Having one increases my score for the game by a full point, and I'm not even sure I am ambivalent about the game anymore. I feel like I can play it intentionally now rather than hoping I stumble into the right course of action.

PROS: Improved level design, more exploration, hilariously bad dialogue and documents, panning cameras, great (or at least fun) villains

CONS: Steve, regenerating moths, tank controls and trying to use those tank controls in tedious boss fights... basically, my normal complaints about all of the old RE games.

The one that got me tonight was the last fight of the Claire portion of the game where you have to be pinpoint accurate with a sniper rifle with what must be the worst sights and shooting controls this side of Medal of Honor: Warfighter. It took me and one of my friends (who is a lot more patient than I am) a solid 45-60 minutes to complete this very brief fight and we had to hear and see a cut scene featuring the unbearable Steve at least 20-25 times during the course of this struggle.

All griping aside, I enjoy these games and Code Veronica is my favorite RE game so far.

Playing on PC. Played ~2 hrs so far.

PROS: The basic gameplay is rewarding. Every victory feels like you earned it.

CONS: The graphics are just terrible, especially for a game released in 2012. It's downright ugly, too. I'm finding it really hard to care about or pay attention to the story. Also, I'm not finding it terribly fun, though it's fun enough that I'm not abandoning it, yet.

I might get back to it.

EDIT: I installed some mods and the UI and graphics are good now.

PROs: it's COH2
CONs: I hate this campaign's guts

Instead of doing a properly paced, linear campaign for this COH2 expansion, Relic decided to experiment with a similar approach they did with the DoW1 expansions Dark Crusade and Soulstorm, and DoW2's Retribution - a map with sort-of sandboxy gameplay, where you choose which mission to do in which order. In Ardennes Assault, you get three companies to move around the map - Infantry, Armor and Paratroopers. So far so good, right?

Well, what I didn't mention is that while some missions are story-oriented scenarios with map-dependant objectives, others are these "special modes" of play which pit you against the AI in a head-to-head match with a twist. You never know which one you're going to get if you don't use a walkthrough, and it's one of those special modes that broke me.

It's called Tank Rush, and the idea is that there are disabled vehicles all around the map, and you need to use up fuel and a unit to repair it and use it. Not a bad idea, all in all, but broken by one fatal flow. These vehicles are not created equal. In fact, they vary SIGNIFICANTLY, from a piece-of-shit scout car to a super heavy tank, and several middle of the road models in between. This mode is INFURIATING, and all it takes is that the enemy secures a heavier tank than you, and you start losing ground immediately, with not a lot you can do about it, as countering with your own tanks is impossible due to low fuel availability. Of course, per regular COH bullshit RNG, this doesn't work both ways, and the enemy always seems to score lucky shots on your tanks, and coordinate his infantry so it takes down your vehicles without too much of a problem. To add insult to injury, COH2's vehicle AI is dead-dumb, and if you try to turn the vehicle, they'll take AGES to move, exposing their weak back armor to enemies like a streaker on a golf course.

I switched to playing the campaign on Easy, as I got wiped out on one of the missions earlier, but for this mode it does NOTHING. I'm at 50% completion of the game, and I just set up all my companies to circle that one mission. And I have no desire to attempt it again.

This campaign feels pretty much abandoned at this point, but I might get back to it in a few weeks, after I forget how shit it is.

Good lord, I cannot think of a single reason for this game to exist.

Ignore the hype about it being a "unique" or "different" take on the exploratory FPS -- it's a 100% Far Cry 3 clone, with "indie" production values, and with robots instead of people. I'll probably finish it because it's short and because it's not doing anything overly offensive beyond being unbelievably bland and derivative, but it's breathtakingly pointless.

PROs: Elder Scrolls universe, Characters are humorous, I like how you can use any weapon/armor no matter your class, Husband plays it.

CONs: I feel compelled to do the daily crafting quests on at least 4/5 characters, Inventory management is the worst, I have a bad track record with dungeons in this game.

This might be the only video game I've played so far this year aside from some Pokémon GO and casual Secret of Mana (1993) on my phone (been more interested in playing board games lately), and my husband is really into it and got the expansion that recently came out, but I lack to enthusiasm to even log in every day and check my mail, crafting, etc. Even when I was subbed, it was still a bunch of inventory management. I love the series, but I hate inventory management so, yeah. I just can't muster any excitement over the new expansion and have basically no desire to play lately. When it starts to feel like chores, it's not fun anymore. I don't exactly abandon games, though. I pretty much always say I'll play it again, someday. laugh

PRO: Fun game, cool ninja robot stuff, makes you feel like a badass, progress.
CON: Grindy, Defense missions are becoming painfully boring.

I feel like every year or two, I pick an F2P game, get insanely into it, throw money at it, proselytize it to all my VGG friends and get a few of them to play it with me, play it for over 1,000 hours, and then burn myself out on it.

First I did this with Path of Exile. Then I did it with SolForge. And most recently, Warframe. I should hasten to say, all three are amazing great games that I recommend. It's just that once you pass the 1,000 hour mark, some things start to wear.

For me, in Warframe, what wears me down most is the monotony of the Defense missions. These consist of defending a target against 10 waves of enemies, with each wave lasting... well, far longer than I want it to last. I think it would be less oppressive if each wave spawned all at once so they didn't seem so long. Or even a counter would help, so you could see a sense of progress during the wave. But as it is now, during a wave you have a seemingly endless stream of enemies to contend with. And after a few minutes, once you have finally hunted down and killed the last of them, that wave counter ticks downwards by one and you know you have to do all of that nine more times. Basically, I want to avoid Defense missions henceforth as much as possible.

The game remains cool though, even though at this point I just need to grind a lot of relics to get the new warframes/weapons. I think my interest in playing has fallen below the pace of their release of new stuff, so I may never complete my goal of owning every single Warframe in the game. And I likely won't play it too much for the next few months. But if someone wants to play multiplayer, especially doing missions for things I still need, I'm probably in.

PROs: Nostalgia, incentive to keep you active, cute critters

CONs: I'm past the point where I see any new Pokémon, earning candies to evolve new species seems like a chore now, there are no Pokémon near my house, rural tracking is still the worst

So I try to log in everyday for the bonuses, but don't really care that much if I don't feel like leaving the house or I forgot to collect coins for a gym. I don't bother logging on much other than events that help me get candies I need for new evolves. Sometimes I don't even feel like walking on my breaks anymore. Leveling up becomes pointless at lvl 30 whistle

PRO: interesting setting

CON: it's almost hilarious how badly paced this game is

AC3 makes a terrible first (and second) impression.

It starts with a cinematic intro that tries to summarise the plot of the last four games (yes, four, the series is funny like that). It does so pretty poorly.

It then throws you into a section which is basically a movement tutorial, only it's being interrupted by cutscene every few paces. Not ideal.

It then finally bloody starts, and it starts with a high note - an assassination scene in an opera/theatre. Interesting!

It then forces you to go through an extended section on a ship, which has barely any action and what little of it there is, is forced.

Then you reach Boston, yay! And you get thrown into a big open location with barely anything in it, boo.

The quests are pretty lackluster, but the chapter picks up by the end and the game is sort of interesting again, yay!

Which leads you to a pretty surprising (albeit nonsensical) reveal, yay...?

And immediately throws you into another extended tutorial for the game's various bullshit crafting/minigame/navigating systems with maybe two decent sections in between... snore.

Seriously, I've played the game for probably four or five hours now, and I feel like I haven't really done *anything*. This game's entire structure in mind-boggling. It feels ancient, despite being just five years old - but being based off a ten year old formula might have something to do with it.

I'm probably going to persevere for just one more chapter, as I want to walk around Boston some more once the game finally opens up a bit... but I don't think I'll continue after that. The combat is amusing, but for an AC game, there's surprisingly little of it. Instead, I just learned how to use the game's obtuse trading system to supposedly craft stuff! Only I f***ing hate crafting mechanics, so I'm annoyed I wasted my time on learning about a system I don't intend to use at all!

What a mess...

Pros: Excessive destruction.

The idea of an open world.

Cons: The execution of the open world system in a racing game isn't all that great, and there are other games that have the option to race and open maps that are easier to navigate.

The game's soundtrack is pretty poor in general, but it always begins with "Paradise City."

A chaotic wreck is no longer as satisfying as in past Burnout games, since you can't move the car afterwards and you have to watch the full crash in slow motion every single time.

The opening seemingly takes forever, which means I have to listen to several minutes of "Paradise City" before I can skip it any time I start the game.

To play any event, you have to travel to it, which results in occasionally traveling across the city to begin a 2 minute challenge.

I assume Axl Rose received royalties for this game.

This is not a bad game, but I'm lacking motivation to get back to it. The setting and story is not bad but the game play is very dated and it just moves very slowly.

Pro: Final Fantasy!!!! Plus cool shiny graphics, and feeds my obsessive internal collector.
Con: Ported mobile game that is P2W, and the shine is wearing as the grind increases.

Started this one a few months back because I love all things Final Fantasy, and it was free. And indeed, I got to go through all the levels, collect the cards and level them up, get different classes of job, all fun and cool.

Well, now what remains is grind. Grindy grind grind against the MP bosses to get materials if I want to power up my attack cards, or get the new weapons. Grind events if I want to get decent rewards. Grind levels I've already beaten if I want to get crystals and elements to power up my weapons and jobs. And grind the daily logins for a month to get a mobius box in order to get a single pull of the Card Summon -- and all the best cards in the game can only be gotten through the random Card Summon. (The decent cards are 50/50 only card summon or buy with an always-insufficiently-accumulated resource called ability tix. The cards you can get just from playing the levels are, of course, crap.)

At this point I'm just logging in for daily rewards, not even playing. Probably gonna end up abandoning this one soon, but who knows, maybe next week when I do my random card draw I'll get something amazing and it'll rekindle my interest.
