Getting Started, Client Setup and Playing Online

To play War of the Ring, you need the game client which is written in Java so you need the Java client installed. There are two options to install it, either get the Toolkit (which automates everything, you don't even need the WOTR client as it will download and configure that and the Java client for you) or to manually download and install/configure Java and the client yourself.

●●● Download Latest WOTR Toolkit ●●●

Option 1 (Windows Only), WotR Toolkit. Download the Toolkit here (note Security Warning below): you can automate all client setup with the WOTR Toolkit. This also includes one-click access to official rules and summaries and helps with saving/managing replays of games from the Online Game Library. If you want to use the full source code (which is released due to the security false-positive mentioned below and will always be available for anyone to use, read, learn AutHotkey, or even help to develop new versions), first install the Autohotkey runtime from www.autohotkey.com and then download the full WOTR Toolkit source code here. The .exe version is just this script combined with the runtime in a single package. With the AutoHotkey running, just double-click on the script to start the Toolkit. The .exe and .ahk are always in sync (whenever I edit and update the .ahk, the .exe is compiled at the same time).

Online Game Library: This is a great feature of the Toolkit to give instant access to hundreds of Tournament games to replay for fun and to learn strategy. Just press Ctrl+Win+K (or Ctrl+Win+F4 for the main tools/save/load menu) to select a game from the online library and the Toolkit will do the rest (automatically download the .log game file, determine what expansions are required and load that version and then prepare the replay for you). Share good games for others to replay: At the end of any game that you and your opponent want to share, press Ctrl+Win+S (or Ctrl+Win+F4) and select the Save to Online Game Library option. The Toolkit will prepare the log files, giving them a date-time stamp and then upload to the Online Library ready for anyone else to enjoy. Please upload any/all games that you want (the more the better), as replaying interesting games is often fun. Also note Ctrl+Win+M (the Main Menu) showing all Toolkit functions.

Security Warning: An annoying and completely false warning appears when downloading and running the Toolkit. This is called a false-positive due to 'heuristics' (i.e. if they don't know a tool, they just falsely assume that it is an evil-radioactive-mutant-ninja-virus). Security / Anti-Virus tools are essential and you should always use them but false-positives do also happen. I wrote the tool over many months and dozens of hours with the sole purpose of trying to make it easy for more people to enjoy using the WOTR client. Due to the false-positives, I've made the source code completely open to anyone and if you use that script with the Autohotkey runtime then no security warnings will ever appear (and reading the source proves that the Toolkit is completely safe, see also here). If you trust the above: On downloading the .exe version in Chrome, just press the arrow to the right of the warning and select "Keep". And if a Security / Anti-Virus gives you a warning, you have to select the "Exclude" option to certify the Toolkit as safe.

●●● Download Latest Client ●●●

Option 2, Manual install (for any platform; Windows, Mac, Linux): Alternatively, you can manually Install Java and download the client. To play, double click on "WOTR-v4.jar" to start the game. Please ask on Discord or the Facebook group as people there are always happy to help with the setup.

Annual Online Tournaments

Tournaments are a great opportunity to test your WotR skills against other players from around the world, and possibly to become the War of the Ring World Champion! The 2013 tournament had 40 players, and it's grown to 70 players in 2020. Prizes are awarded to the winners, and the tournament generates many great log files to replay and learn from.

Finding game opponents and posting to the Online Ladder

To find games, (1) Post or accept game requests in the Facebook group (you can also post any additional questions here, this is well watched and will be answered quickly, but specific rules questions should normally be posted to the various Rules forums via the above BoardGameGeek Links to rules forums and files as these BGG forums are an important reference resource with hundreds of rules questions, clarifications and discussions), then (2) Post results onto the Online Results Forum (using results calculated from the Ladder spreadsheet, see below), then (3) the leader board maintainers will be notified of a posting and will pick up the results and update them onto the ladder leader board over the next day.

(1) Post or accept game requests: War of the Ring Online Facebook Group
(2) Post results of ladder games: WotR Online Ladder 2018 Results Forum
(3) War of the Ring current ladder leader board: WotR Ladder 2018 Note: 2018 tab (current leaderboard), CHECK RESULTS tab (calculate scores).

Once two players have agreed to a game, decide on whether the game will be a 'ladder' game (scores go onto the ladder ranking) or a 'friendly' game (no ladder rankings will change in a friendly game) and decide any expansions/variants to be used, such as Lords of Middle-earth with or without the Treebeard promo expansion (Warriors of Middle-earth is not available yet, but has been beta tested and may become available in future) or to use the Dwarven Rings (2nd Ed), which is mostly used only in the 3rd game of a best-of-three tournament match to determine sides (also note the older 1st Edition link Dwarven Rings (1st Ed)).

For a ladder game, one player posts the results to the Online Results Forum and the Ladder maintainers will then update these results into the Ladder (generally every day or two).
Once a game is complete, results are added to the ladder as follows:

a) Calculate results: Go to the WotR Ladder (2017 Tab) to see current rankings. On the Ladder spreadsheet, go to the CHECK RESULTS tab, and then follow the instructions there to calculate results using the usernames that are listed on the main tab. Note: If you are not yet on the ladder, just ask on the Online Results Forum and your BGG username will be added to the Ladder.

b) Announce results: Go to the WotR Online results forum and post up the results copying the the details from the CHECK RESULTS tab above into the posting (check some other posts if unsure what to put here).

c) Wait for the results to be updated: The Ladder maintainers will update the rankings when they get a chance (usually updated at least once a day).

How to connect and play opponents via INTERNET / HAMACHI / NETWORK

For all of these, note that INTERNET, HAMACHI, NETWORK values will be listed in the comments section (bottom right of the game interface) on starting the client (will not show if the client is reset from the File menu, and note that you can always pull these values up from Multiplayer > Get My IP Address). HAMACHI will not be shown unless you have installed Hamachi and have it running. The PORT value is only shown by the hosting player when he starts hosting a game (from Multiplayer menu > Host Game...) and for the opponent to connect to (from Multiplayer menu > Connect to host...). Note: In all of the below, try to just keep the default PORT of 4747. Both parties must use the same port, and this can be changed, but the only reason to change this is if one party has an application that is using this port, which is seldom the case, so I won't mention PORT any more in the below, just keep it as 4747 and all should work fine). Noting this, you can setup games as follows:

NETWORK connection (both PC's on local LAN): Listing this first, as it is the easiest. a) Hosting player first goes to Multiplayer menu > Host Game... and presses "Wait for Connection" button. A dialogue will say "Waiting...", b) then, the other player simply connects directly from the other computer using Multiplayer menu > Connect to Host...

HAMACHI connection: Both players download the free Hamachi and install. Both must create Hamachi accounts. The hosting player creates a network (very easy in the simply Hamachi user interface) then turns it on (press the big Power On button in the Hamachi interface). Give your opponent the details of the network (network name, and connection password if one is set) to connect to and once he has connected, simply setup a game as per the NETWORK connection above as both PC's are now effectively local to each other on this Hamachi network (but just make sure to use the HAMACHI IP address instead of the NETWORK or INTERNET IP addresses!).

INTERNET connection: This has the most steps as have to alter router / firewall settings (though it is still very easy to setup). The hosting player must either open the specific port (default 4747 as above). Note that opening a port may require both a change to your Firewall in the operating system and to your internet router to open that port to the hosting PC's specific LAN IP address, *or* add his PC to the DMZ option (PC is still protected via the Operating System Firewall) in the router which will open this PC to ports incoming to the router. Then, give the opponent his INTERNET IP (shown in the bottom right in the comments section of the game when the game is started) to connect to after having pressed the "Wait for Connection" button in the Multiplayer > Host Game option), after which the opponent then uses Multiplayer menu > Connect to Host... and inputs INTERNET IP and presses "Connect to Host".

Replaying Games

One of the best ways to learn War of the Ring strategy is to replay log files which record entire games. For example, every log file from the 2016 International Online Tournament can be downloaded and studied here. The games are links that say fr (Free People Ring victory, reached the Cracks of Doom without being corrupted), fm (Free People Military victory, Free Peoples achieved 4 Victory Points), sr (Shadow Ring victory, the Fellowship was corrupted), sm (Shdadow Military victory, Shadow achieved 10 Victory Points). To use these, open the War of the Ring client in the base game (these are all base 2nd Edition games) and then go to the Replay menu > Load Replay File... and select a log file. Turn up the speed with Ctrl-Shift-Equals (5 to 8 times is good to get a decent speed), then start the game replay with Ctrl-Space. Pause/Play the game throughout playback again with Ctrl-Space.
Play/Pause (Ctrl-Space), Faster (Ctrl-Shift-Equals), Slower (Ctrl-Minus), Next Breakpoint (Ctrl-B), Insert Breakpoint (no shortcut), Step (Space)
Note: you can't make the game log go backwards using the replay tool, but you can see each action in the output at bottom right to look at anything you missed.

Face the evil minions of Sauron on the field of battle in a desperate attempt to delay their onslaught, while you lead the Fellowship of the Ring in the Quest for Mount Doom.

As the Shadow player you lead the hordes of the Dark Lord and his most powerful minions as they try to bring darkness to Middle-earth. Legions of Orcs, Trolls, Wolfriders and the dreadful Ringwraiths await your command. Hunt the Ring-bearer and bring the precious Ring to his Master, or crush your enemies with your unstoppable armies.

https://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic1450880.jpg What if...
... the Keepers of the Elven Rings had used their Rings of Power to challenge the might of the Dark Lord?
... the Balrog had risen out of Moria to bring fire and fury to the lands of the Free Peoples?
... the Council of Elrond had decided differently regarding the Fellowship of the Ring?

With Lords of Middle-earth™, the first expansion for the War of the Ring™ Second Edition board game, players may explore these possibilities, together with many other ones, to create fresh gaming opportunities and new strategies.

Important personalities, previously featured in the game only through Event Cards, are represented by specific figures and rules. New Characters include • Elrond (Keeper of Vilya), • Galadriel (Keeper of Nenya), • Sméagol (Tamed Wretch), • Gothmog and the powerful • Balrog of Moria, as well as alternate versions of • Gandalf (Keeper of Narya), the • Witch-king (Chief of Ringwraiths) and the • Mouth of Sauron (Black Númenórean).

New special Action Dice are included: Elven Ring Keepers dice for the Free Peoples player and Lesser Minion dice for the Shadow player. New versions of all the Companions of the Fellowship of the Ring are also included, to play the optional “Council of Rivendell” rules.

As an added bonus, figures for Aragorn and Gandalf the White are provided, accessories to the
game that fans have been eagerly awaiting!

These warriors and creatures of Middle-earth – previously featured only as special Event Cards – will become an essential part of the game, with unique figures and specific abilities.

Warriors of Middle-earth™ will also present new mechanics to enhance the game: Faction Dice and Faction Events, used together with the new figures, will open up new and exciting strategies and make the War of the Ring Second Edition even more challenging and fun. ● Treebeard (Promotional Mini-Expansion 2012, 2017) ●

Mini-Expansion promotional item originally from the release of Lords of Middle-earth at Essen 2012, containing a new miniature (Treebeard, which is not included in Lords of Middle-earth; this is a complete stand-alone component) and a play card for this miniature. The card constitutes all of the rules for the miniature. A new version has been released in 2017 to address a minor balance issue (it was felt that the character was slightly underpowered and therefore was seldom ever brought into play).

!!! New version (2017) !!!

Root and Branch!. When you play any "The Ents Awake" Event Card, re-roll one missed die.
Earthborn. If Treebeard is in a battle, and the defending Army is in Fangorn, Orthanc or a Rohan region, add one to the Combat strength of the Free Peoples Army (you can still roll a maximum of 5 Combat dice).

● Tidings not Burdens (Promotional Mini-Expansion 2016) ●

Mini-Expansion promotional item from the release of Warriors of Middle-earth, containing 2 new Event cards (BGG)

FLY, YOU FOOLS! Play if there is an Eagle Figure in the same region as the Fellowship, and the Fellowship is hidden. Discard the Eagle Figure in the same region as the Fellowship, and immediately move the Fellowship to the Crack of Doom step on the Mordor track. The Free Peoples player wins the game unless the Shadow player can provide a good argument against it.

I WAS SENT TO BEAR TIDINGS, NOT BURDENS Look at the cards in the hand of the Free Peoples player. You may discard one card with the word "Eagle" or "Eagles" on it, removing it permanently from the game. Give the remaining cards to the Free Peoples player. If you discard "Fly, You Fools!" In this way, you win the game.

The Battle of Five Armies

Although this is quite a different game to War of the Ring, it shares some elements from the War of the Ring game such as the dice and card mechanics. The game was published by Ares in 2014. As War of the Ring is sometimes abbreviated to "WotR", Battle of Five Armies is sometimes abbreviated to "B5A".

Current quick FAQ notes

Some of the things here may seem obvious to experienced players, but hopefully of use to those trying to work out some tricky points:
- This link discusses the Worn with Sorrow and Toil (WWSAT) card, and how it applies to different Hunt and Event card and the Hobbit abilities.
- A revealed FSP may reveal in Carrock or other Towns; the FSP is only restricted from revealing in a City or a Stronghold.
- Nazgûl may leave, or enter a beseiged Stronghold (as they can fly). A Character result on an Action die or a card that moves Nazgûl is enough to move them out of the siege.
- Axe & Bow / Horn of Gondor / Gollum's ability can reduce damage against a Foul Thing from the Deep card, but cannot against Isildur's Bane (all damage goes directly to the Corruption track).

Mini-Tournaments

The following is a quick 3-day tournament with 8 players that was played over the weekend of 28th-30th September 2012. All 8 players had to commit to 5 games each over the 3 days, but this is a fantastic way to run a short format tournament and hopefully more of these will be organised.

Rules Changes from 1st to 2nd Edition

War of the Ring 2nd Edition - Rules Changes

Core Rules Changes:
- Witch-king: Cannot enter play unless Sauron and one Free Peoples Nation is at war (previously only required Sauron at war).
- Witch-king: May only draw a card of the same type after using a Combat card on the first round of a Combat (previously could draw a card of either type).
- Gandalf the Grey: Guide ability allows draw of new event card if event die is used to play it (previously only applied to character deck).
- Merry/Pippin: When taken as a casualty in the Fellowship can be placed on the board as if they'd separated (this previously cost an action die).
- The Shadow player is required to place one die in the Hunt Allocation Pool if the Fellowship moved the previous turn.
- When the Fellowship has reached Morannon or Minas Morgul, they can decide during a Fellowship phase to enter Mordor. This does not require the Fellowship to be hidden, as in the First edition, and prevents turn stalling through cards that reveal the Fellowship.
- An extra Dwarf elite placed in Erebor at game setup.

Event/Combat Cards:
- The combat card playing sequence has been clarified. There are also priorities added to the combat cards to help clear up confusion on the order of effects.
- Path of the Woses: An army from Rohan can use it to reach Minas Tirith under any circumstances (previously required a friendly army be present at Minas Tirith).
- The Last Battle: Now restricted to Aragorn, who must be with an army in a region outside a Free Peoples nation (previously could be Aragorn or Gandalf the White, with a Free Peoples army in North Ithilien, South Ithilien, Dagorlad, or any region in Mordor)
- Ent cards (3 cards): Now only require that Gandalf the White be in play and any Companion be present in Fangorn (previously required both Gandalf the White and Saruman, and that Gandalf be present in Rohan or Fangorn).

Clarifications:
- Various other wording changes, such as the Gollum card (no rule change, but a slight clarification on which tiles reveal the Fellowship).
